5 Kids Ice Activities

We are still hitting the 80's everyday and it's humid and sticky. Thank goodness for the pool. Here are some super easy icy activities to cool the kids down using ingredients and supplies you most likely already have around the house. If you're like me, you find a project and want to do it right away not run to the store first! All of these recipes are easy so kids can help make them or you can make them ahead of time so you don't have to listen to "is it done yet?" for about 3 hours until they are frozen. Just sayin'.

1. Frozen Chalk
This was a lot of fun and they were really pretty. Once it dries, it looks just like regular chalk.
You will need:
1 cup cornstarch
1 cup water
food coloring
ice cube tray - any size shape will do

How to make it:
Mix the cornstarch and water until it is no longer lumpy.
Put about 6 drops of food coloring in each cube. I almost did the rainbow but I forgot yellow. Oops!
Scoop or pour the cornstarch/water mixture in the tray. I recommend using a measuring cup with a spout. It doesn't have to be perfect.
FREEEZE!

2. Dinosaur Dig Ice Cubes
I got these tiny little plastic dinosaurs at Dollar General for $1 a few weeks ago. I put one in each cube and filled with water then froze. You can use anything small if you don't have dinosaurs. Buttons, erasers, sequins, googly eyes, shopkins etc. We "rescued" all of them! Yes, that's a real tiny hammer. It was only slightly scary watching it come down near little fingers.

All you need for this is food coloring and water! Fill each cube with about 10 drops of food coloring then fill with water and freeze. We used a giant roll of packing paper and it looked really pretty once it all dried. You could do this and then wrap presents with it. Our hands were only slightly dyed after this. I was thinking it would be fun to use a toy bulldozer to push them around on the paper too.

4. Ice Cube Skaters
Raid the toys for a few small people figures - army men, action figures, legos people, little people, etc. Put one in each tray standing up, fill with water and freeze. Use a tarp, aluminum foil or cookie sheet as a skating rink. You could even race the skaters down a slide like we did!

5. Colored Fizzy Ice
Ingredients:
Vinegar
Food Coloring
Baking Soda
Ice Cubes

Mix the vinegar with some food coloring into bowls or test tubes. Grab a container of ice. Sprinkle a spot with baking soda then use a spoon or dropper to add the vinegar colors. It will fizz and looks really cool! Keep going until you run out of ice or start all over again! We used a medicine syringe - really good motor skills activity. This one took the cake. It was over half an hour of entertainment and tonight when tucking Cole in, he asked if we could do it again tomorrow.
