Grab a carton of eggs and let the fun begin! I remember my brother used to challenge me to break an egg in my hands. You hold it the long way so the top of the egg is at your fingers and the bottom is on your palm. It's impossible. Seriously, google it. It's impossible to break an egg in a vertical position in your hand. I don't quite think it was fair since he was ten years older but it was a lot of fun! We decided to try out a a few experiments and games. Check them out below.
1. Naked egg experiment
Vinegar will dissolve the egg shell leaving just the membrane. You can see the yolk through it! So cool! It's rubbery. Using a jar with a lid, add enough white vinegar to cover the egg. Put the lid on. Track the egg's progress each day. It gets all bubbly in the jar. I took pictures each day. You can see those below. After about 4 days, you can take the egg out and squish it in your hands carefully. This is also called the rubber egg experiment but little kids think a "naked" egg is so much cooler. "It's naked and has no shell?" my son asked every day. If you have more patience and let your egg sit in the vinegar a little longer, like a few more days, you should be able to gently drop it from a few inches above the ground and it will bounce. We Cole tried but held it about a foot and a half above the wooden deck and it smashed. It was neat to see the membrane. "What's that white thing?"
2. Egg on a spoon
This works great as a race between two but would also be fun for one child. Can you make it from one side of the yard to the other without dropping it? How about ten more times while I read this book? Just kidding. If you REALLY want to make this interesting, you could have older kids or adults, place the spoon in their mouths while balancing the egg to get across the finish line without dropping it!
3. Try to fry and egg in the driveway on a hot day
We were not successful but I've always wanted to try this since I was little. We put a frying pan out in the morning on an 85 degree day. The pan got really hot on our driveway so later we put the egg in. The egg looked a bit different but did not cook. We accidentally left it outside overnight and something ate it! But there were some thin cooked pieces left over! I also washed the pan in scalding hot water 10 times because I could just picture an opossum with their long rat tails eating it. Ew. And I really like my granite stone cookware. lol
4. Walk on eggs
Put out a full carton of eggs and take turns walking across them! You will not break them! We rarely have a full carton so I was sure to do this as soon as our groceries arrived. Once we were done, I washed the eggs and dried them, then put them back in the carton. It would be even more fun to do a row of two cartons or an 18 pack of eggs. Is that what it's called? An 18 pack or a dozen and half? Anyway...
5. Egg roll game
This is a good one for a rainy day because I think it would be more difficult on an uneven surface like grass so we did it inside. Hard boil a few eggs. Yes, you'll want them hard boiled so they don't crack open on your less than one year old floor that's nearly impossible to clean and keep clean. Make a line with tape. Get down on your knees and put your hands behind your back. Using your nose, be the first to push your egg over the tape finish line! This would be a great Easter game for the whole family too! Use those dyed Easter eggs up! We always have a lot of leftovers. I couldn't get any pictures of this one because I had to do it too! And I'm not fancy enough for timers and all that. The dog also wasn't willing to take our picture. But it was a lot of fun!
