DIY Winter Bird Feeder

We live in New England so this bird feeder is a lot of fun to make.  I don’t ever buy bird seed but I found a list of approved kitchen “scraps” that are safe for birds. Check out the list Here. This is fun for kids since they can crush with the rolling pin and it’s a no rules type of activity.

You’ll need:

A Bundt pan or cake pan, whatever you want to use

Your bird safe kitchen scraps

Water

Rolling pin for crushing (optional)

And some good old winter weather

We used:

Orange slices

Cheerios, crushed

Chex cereal, crushed

Peanuts, crushed

Almonds, crushed

Sunflower seeds

To make:

Spread out all of your ingredients in the pan, then add enough water to cover all of the items. Stick it in your freezer or outside to freeze. Once frozen you can remove from the pan and tie with a bow to hang or you can put it on the ground so you can see from your sliding glass door ...

Some of the Almond pieces are a bit large but maybe the deer will also enjoy a tasty treat. We have a big field behind our house and we saw a ton of deer tracks while chasing down our pesty puggle who decided to jump the fence and run around.

I think it looks really pretty. I’ve made ice wreaths before with berries and evergreen as a decoration and those were gorgeous.
